Prerequisites: csh and glibc
1. There are two DVD's you get with ArcGIS Engine - The Runtime and the Developer Kit (SDK). The runtime needs to be installed first. Put in the runtime DVD and copy the Linux directory to your /tmp drive or where ever you like to put temporary files. We'll assume for this document that you copied the Linux directory to /tmp.
2. Fire up your terminal program. Change directory to:
$> /tmp/Linux/ArcGISEngineRT/Linux/Disk1/InstData/VM
3. Make a copy of the install.bin file to install.bin.bak. I needed to use sudo to do this:
$> sudo cp install.bin install.bin.bak
4. We need to replace all instances of "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL" to "#xport LD_ASSUME_KERNEL" This effectivly comments out the line, but keeps the line the same size. Do not just put a hash mark in front of the export. See this posting:

$> sed -i "s/export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL/#xport LD_ASSUME_KERNEL/g" install.bin
5. I want to install ArcGIS Engine in my /opt directory, so that my ArcGIS home directory is /opt/arcgis . I generally use /opt as a place to store binaries that apt-get does not manage. What I did on my system was to create a group called development, that my user account is a member off. I then gave that group ownership of the programs installed under /opt. This is more of a personal preference, you might want to install it elsewhere.
I want to create this directory and give it appropriate permissions before running the installer.
$> cd /opt
$> sudo mkdir arcgis
$> sudo chgrp -Rf development arcgis
$> sudo chmod -Rf g+rwx arcgis
5. Now, navigate to your Linux directory that you copied off the runtime disk.
$> cd /tmp/Linux
6. Run Setup.
$> sh Setup
7. Run through the wizard. Everything is pretty straight forward here. For my install directory I used /opt/arcgis.
8. If everything went well you now have the ArcGIS Engine runtime installed. Now you need to install the SDK. Put the SDK DVD in and copy the Linux/EngineDevKitJava directory to your /tmp drive. So let's assume that you can get to this directory at /tmp/EngineDevKitJava
9. Change directory to where your install.bin file is located.
$>cd /tmp/EngineDevKitJava/ArcGISEngineDevKitJava/Linux/Disk1/InstData/VM
10. We need to fix the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL lines again. First back up the install.bin file, then replace. See steps 3 and 4.
11. Change directory back to the root of your EngineDevKitJava directory:
$>cd /tmp/EngineDevKitJava
12. Run Setup
$> sh Setup
13. The wizard steps are pretty self explanatory. Once again I installed ArcGIS Engine into /opt/arcgis.
14. Registration: For some reason, on the authorization wizard I get a segmentation fault when I try to browse for the license file. I would just manually type in the path to your *.ecp file.
15. For Eclipse users, you probably want the ArcGIS Eclipse plugins installed as well. You will need Visual Editor installed first - if you haven't installed Eclipse yet, I reccomend checking out the Eclipse Callisto project. Fire up Eclipse, and go to:
Help->Software Updates->Find and Install
16. Choose "Search For New Features"
17. On the "Update Sites To Visit" dialog, click "Add New Local Site" and browse to
/opt/arcgis/java/tools/eclipse_plugin/arcgis_update_site/core
Name this site something descriptive - ArcGIS Core
18. Add another local site - this time browse to
/opt/arcgis/java/tools/eclipse_plugin/arcgis_update_site/engine
Name this site - ArcGIS Engine
19. Make sure both of your update sites are checked and click "Finish" Install all available packages that the updater lists.
You now have a working copy of ArcGIS Engine 9.2 installed on Ubuntu Edgy.

Now, i still have a problem, some library entry points not resolved.

hello you , i'm thenh . i'm learning at the army technical academy of Viet nam , i'm doing about arcgis engine for graduate subject . i have got 3 month to do it . i do about style and symbol standarlize .Meaning that when i change map ratio(1:5000 or 1: 1000000 or 1:250000) , map will change and update automatically from symbol in style appropriately .
as your answer is what i want to ask . that is layers's symbol changing according to maps scale . my intend is when every time i change map's scale , then map update automatically symbol.
specific example , map's scale is 50.000 then load the symbol of 50.000 and , map's scale is 100.000 then load the symbol of 100.000
i have learn about C# , my meaning combine between C# and ArcGis Engine . but specialist knowledge about ArcGis Engine isn't good
